[Blog] Is It Really a Wickham Wonderland?
Written by Priskinftw on Tuesday, 22nd Mar 2011 19:12

I'm not a Wickham hater, in fact I think he has immense potential and could become one of the best strikers England has ever seen. However, I don't believe he is right for us at this moment in time.

So far, what we have seen from him is glimpses of quality and an impressive workrate, an aggressive streak and poor finishing.

I recently went to the Portsmouth game at Portman Road, and the headed chance he had, about three or four yards out, he should have buried it. I think that's what we are missing, a real poacher and that's not what Connor's about. I see him as more of a target man than a finisher and that's just not what we need at the moment.

I understand that he is young and still learning his trade but he should be restricted to occasional starts and mostly sub appearances. He's being played in an unfamiliar position, which he is using until Luca can start again, but I feel he is wasted out there, his cross completion rate is not good enough, and he always looks to cut inside on his right foot.

I think this season will do him the world of good, will make him a better player but at this moment in time, I think we should cash in, get about £10-11 million for him plus a player or two, can be used to strengthen areas of the squad that we really need to. In the deal, we could get him loaned back to us which would be a bonus.

It seems he is a bit of a fan favourite, but I'd rather cash in on him now, and get a squad that is strong enough to challenge for automatic promotion, then keep him, playing on the left, not very useful and stay in mid-table mediocrity.

Not a bad read and some reasonable points but a lot of dreaming thrown in.

Yes ideally Connor should be restricted to occasional starts, if we had this 25 goal a season striker that we've all been dreaming about, but the reality is we don't have one! Who would you replace him with then mr Priskinftw? ;o)

And cash in for £11M - plus players - plus loan back to us? Who has offered that deal then?!!

The beauty of football is that it's all about opinions, but Jewell has said before he would prefer us to play 4-4-2, so this will be our formation next season. I believe Connor playing up top with an out and out goalscorer would be a frightening partnership. There's no need to cash in as Marcus doesnt need the money, we can already build a squad and if we then get promoted Connor will continue to get better and better, and we will be so glad he is still a town player, rather than seeing our brightest prospect going on to better elsewhere.

tbh, i would buy graham or sharp. proven goalscorers! tbh, with the kind of ridiculous transfer fees going around these days we should be able to get a deal like that! i just feel he's not ready yet, he needs mentoring

Oh wow! he won Awards, its only because he's played alot of games this season and all the big teams want him. and yet other young players like wickham have done so much better than him.

Wickham has great potential, that is it. Apart from the individual effort against sheffield united & a handful of league goals he's been as disappointing as any Ipswich player this season. (excluding McAuley & Bullard)

His size and strength have got him this far. Both managers he has played under seem to love him and recently he's been one of the first names on the team sheet. His assured place in the starting 11 is helped by the fact that his only competition is the under-performing Priskin & Scotland.

Give any one of the promising youthful reserve team this much hype, first-team loyalty & media attention and we could have a team of 'connor wickhams'.

the lads first real consistant run in the team has come under PJ, and out on the wing. give the lad a strike partner.. someone with experience and who can talk and advise on the pitch and i think you will see a much more clinical and better CW next season, lads barely 18 if that.

Rubbish to this! Fan favouroite or not, he's scored some cracking goals, scores regulary under Jewell, and his workrate is good, he reminds me of Andy Carroll in some ways, ofcourse we need Connor Wickham, we'd be lost without him.
